I’m a longtime fan of branded company podcasts that are positioned for an audience of employees; the first show I hosted for over 100 episodes was a Dropbox podcast for employees. And there are a few different models for distributing the show - on the one side you can keep the content protected on an intranet and dedicated apps, but adoption will suffer. The middle ground are great solutions now for distributing individual private feeds to employees. And some companies just go with making their employee-oriented podcast a public feed that wider stakeholders and interested parties can listen to. That small subset includes Walmart:
The Huddle with John Furner
Like some other employee comms podcasts, the show has motivating messages, key business priorities, and relevant news for employees. What really matters for these kinds of shows are the long-term commitment to regular updates, senior access, and transparency. The Huddle does a great job on these dimensions. The host is Walmart’s U.S. President & CEO, and he’s covered both celebratory topics but also tougher times like changes to the stores during COVID.
What’s most remarkable though is how the show mirror’s John Furner’s time leading the huge U.S. business. Episode 1 was titled “John’s First Day” back in November 2019, and he’s been releasing roughly monthly episodes ever since! That’s impressive consistency and I’m sure pays off in attracting a growing employee audience and building connection across the team.
