The Olympics continues on, and so do my reviews of Olympics podcasts. We have some podcasting heavy hitters today, as I showcase what NPR and CBC bring to Olympic podcasting:
Tested
It’s perfect for NPR that they are taking the narrative, in-depth storytelling format to an underdiscussed topic that intersects with the Olympics. “Tested follows the unfolding story of elite female runners who have been told they can no longer race as women, because of their biology. As the Olympics approach, they face hard choices: take drugs to lower their natural testosterone levels, give up their sport entirely, or fight. To understand how we got here, we trace the surprising, 100-year history of sex testing.”
It’s a fascinating and heartbreaking journey. NPR produced the show as part of their long-running documentary podcast Embedded, which also means it benefits from being released in the show’s main feed. My favorite aspect of the show though is seeing host Rose Eveleth back in action. Rose created and hosted Flash Forward, which imagined future scenarios of science, technology, and society that are compelling and prescient. Rose’s work was and is powered by members on Patreon / Memberful.
