At Brands in Audio, we categorize branded company podcasts into four categories based on the type of brand represented:
- Corporate / startup
- Non-profit
- Individual Expert
- Media Companion
Most shows are part of a corporate or start up company. Non-profit shows can be pretty similar, but sometimes have a bigger element of advocacy messaging. Individual expert is our designation for when the show centers around a person who has a professional practice where they are the face of it. And lastly, we use the media companion designation for where the podcast is in support an alternative content channel that is the main revenue source for the company.
I bring that up with this week of my Fortune 271-280 podcast roundups since it includes Fox Corporation. They have a big podcast network that is primarily companions for their TV shows. Other examples like this are Netflix with their podcasts about their shows, and websites with mostly written / blog content that also have podcasts.
